Instrument Handling and Maintenance

Using just a few extra precautions could possibly give your instrument a longer life.
Here are a few tips that Instrument Sales recommends:

Instrument Handling

  • Always carry the instrument in its case whenever transporting, and during transportation cushion the instrument against shock. When taking the instrument out of the plastic case, grip the standards firmly and pull it out, or use the handle if it has one.

  • Never place the instrument on the ground. Sand or dust stuck to the lower surfaces of the instrument will damage tripod head and centering screw.

  • Do not hold the two standards to carry the instrument around a job site. Always grip one standard and use the other hand to support the instrument. If it is necessary to carry the instrument with the tripod attached, do not carry it on the shoulder.

  • When leaving the instrument set up: place the lens cap on and cover the whole instrument with the vinyl cover.

  • Protect the instrument against the elements: rain, strong direct sunlight etc.

  • During transportation: always place accessories in their correct position, to prevent displacement.

  • Drying a wet instrument: wipe the instrument carefully, remove the foam inserts and let them dry out completely. When everything is completely dry you may place the instrument back in its container.

Instrument Maintenance

  • The surveying instrument can be affected by moisture. If it begins to rain during the surveying operation, wipe off the instrument with clean cotton wool. Always clean the instrument before returning it to the case. Brush off the lenses, breathe on them, (never touching lenses  with fingers) and wipe them clean with a cotton cloth or tissue. Never use liquids such as oil, benzene or water, or detergents.

  • After constant use, regularly check the tripod for any loose or defective parts.

  • Contact Instrument Sales immediately if:

    • There is condensation or mold on any of the internal surfaces of the telescope.

    • There is any foreign matter (dust, etc.) clogging any threaded or movable components.

    • If the instrument has been dropped. Do not force any motion as this may cause further damage.

  • Storage: remove the instrument from its container so that air can circulate around it. This helps to prevent mildew and fungus. The storage area should be dustproof, have good air circulation and low humidity. In extreme cold, don't take the instruments indoors during non-working periods but leave them in a protected place at outside temperature, this prevents condensation.

The specifications and general appearance of the instrument may be altered or improved at any time and may differ from those appearing in catalogues and operation manual.
