Experienced Design Team - over 95 years of designing, developing, manufacturing, selling, marketing, repairing and supporting weak magnetic field measuring/reporting locators. SubSurface Instruments Magnetic Locators, ML-1 and ML-1M, can be used to find the following items, and any target containing at least a small amount of iron or steel:
Both Locators come with a 5-year warranty. Not just good enough to do the job, good enough to last a lifetime Features:

Description:
Your target must contain some iron or steel, or have an electrical current flowing through it, so that Magnetic Locators can find it.
The strongest signals come from the ends of an object. Therefore if an object is oriented vertically, it will produce a stronger signal than one oriented horizontally. For example, an 18 inch piece of steel re-bar driven into the ground would be detected as one very strong signal directly above the top end.
The same piece buried horizontally would give off two weaker signals, one directly above each end (one being "+" and one being "-"). The ML-1 and ML-1M "peak" at the strongest point of the magnetic signal.
The same principles apply to iron or steel pipe.
Cast iron or steel water pipe laid end to end will produce a strong signal at each joint, even if the pipes are welded together. This makes the ML-1 or ML-1M a great tool for locating pipe joints.
If the pipe has a large diameter and it is situated vertically, such as with a manhole or well casing, the ML-1 or ML-1M will find a signal around the circumference of the pipe opening. The manhole cover will even be "+" on one edge and "-" on the other.
Electric cables must be energized (have power flowing through them) to be detected magnetically. The ML-1 or ML-1M will emit a distinct warbling sound along the direct line of the energized cable. |
